Power utility Eskom says it is working with the Ministry of Electricity and other stakeholders to protect the national grid. It hosted stakeholders in the energy sector to outline efforts to stabilise the grid.

The ailing state-owned company maintains that a total grid collapse is highly unlikely, despite the fragile state of the national power supply.

Eskom says officials continue to prepare for any eventuality and risks, linked to the power grid at 29 of its power stations nationally.

But, Eskom’s GM System Operator, Isabel Fickr says chances of a total grid collapse are low.

The power utility has ramped up its implementation of rolling blackouts, raising unfounded concerns of a fragile system on the brink of collapse.

However, Eskom officials has dismissed these claims, saying the various stages of rolling blackouts are in line with the Electricity Regulation Act 4 of 2006.

Consumers are urged to continue using electricity sparingly, while the entity is continuing to educate people about how the country’s power grid operates.
