eThekwini to vote for a new Mayor today

A special sitting of the eThekwini Municipal Council will today vote to appoint a new Mayor.

This follows the redeployment of Mxolisi Kaunda last month.

Kaunda was redeployed by the ANC to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) in Cape Town.

The only ANC run metro in the country, eThekwini, has come under fire from residents for a range of service delivery challenges, including water shortages and sewerage infrastructure breakdowns.

Last month, the ANC redeployed its chairperson of the Defence Portfolio Committee in the National Assembly Cyril Xaba to the eThekwini Metro council.

Xaba, who was the KwaZulu-Natal Agriculture MEC between 2014 and 2019, took up the seat left vacant by Kaunda.

Kaunda welcomed his redeployment and spoke out against critics who have lamented the state of service delivery in the Metro, saying his work speaks for itself.
