The Polokwane municipality in Limpopo says it will send additional water tankers to the community of Bergnek outside Polokwane while they seek a permanent solution.

Bergnek village has been facing a water shortage crisis for almost three months.

Residents are forced to get water from a nearby periodic river.

The Polokwane Municipality has attributed the water shortage to illegal connections made by residents, who tapped into the main water line for their domestic use.

Polokwane Municipality Spokesperson Thipa Selala says they have deployed a law enforcement team to dismantle illegal water connections in the area.

“There is a project currently yielding positive results, an authorized tabbing of water from the main pipes, particularly when water is pumped from boreholes to the main reservoirs is severely disrupting the water pressure. This destruction is particularly problematic for high-lying areas which often end up not receiving water at all. To address these, we have reached an agreement with community members to deploy a law enforcement team to disconnect the illegal connections as soon as possible,” he said.
