Professional nurses in the Free State have urged Health MEC Monyatso Mahlatsi to address what they describe as unfair labour practices in the province.

Approximately 90 professional nurses are working as support staff with the promise of permanent employment when positions become available.

Aliva Khathaza, one of the nurses who met with officials from the provincial Health Department, says they have been overlooked for about four years.

Khathaza states, “We are here holding a meeting with the management and we discussed all the issues but the responses that we got are only promises. There is nothing that is reassuring but we are still being used by the Department of Health. This seems to us like unfair labour practice so we need help.”
