Families of the two women who were killed at a pig farm at Sebayeng in Limpopo say they are still in shock. Maria Makgato and Kudzai Ndlovu were allegedly shot and killed at the farm last weekend.

Their remains were reportedly thrown inside a pig’s enclosure by the perpetrators.

The home of Makgato, a mother of four, is situated less than ten kilometers from the farm. Her remains and those of Ndlovu were discovered in a state of decomposition by the police on Tuesday.

Makgato was reported missing after visiting the farm. Her brother, Walter Mathole, details how the family traced her to the farm, however they were not provided with helpful information.

“I went there and asked the workers if they had seen my sister, and they said they were absent from work on Monday. I asked the seller next door and he told me he heard gunshots last night. I asked the employer who fed the pigs if they did not see the dead bodies and he said no. Now I know they were lying because the pigs cannot go three days without being fed.”

A man who was with the deceased women was also shot, but escaped with injuries.

Mathole says the family wants justice.

“We have lost, my sister’s children are now orphans, and I will have to now take care of them, I need help and I want those farm owners to be denied bail. I do not want to see them free.”

Chairperson of the ANC Women’s League in Limpopo, Mamedupi Teffo, says they want the perpetrators to be denied bail.

“We are not encouraging people to be killed, particularly women to be killed regardless of what they have done, so we also want to appeal to community members to say that they need to report any incident of gender-based violence and femicide in our own province so this incident disturbed us,” says Teffo.

The three suspects, farm owner Zacharia Olivier and two workers, Rudolf de Wet, and William Musora, will appear again in the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on the 30th of August. They were remanded in custody. They have been charged with two counts of murder and one of attempted murder.
