Family discovers body of loved one after shack fire

Police say the body of a 36-year-old man was discovered by a family member inside a shack at Ipopeng informal settlement in Bloemfontein.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thabo Covane says the deceased was last seen alive by his mother when he arrived home at midnight and asked for food from the main house.

Covane says the family and the neighbours woke up around one o’clock in the morning after seeing the shack at the back of the main house engulfed in flames.

The fire was extinguished and everyone went to sleep without noticing that the victim was still inside the shack.

An Inquest docket was opened and is being investigated at Kopanong Police Station.
