The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) says it is investigating what appeared to be an assassination attempt on former United States (US) President Donald Trump at his West Palm Beach Golf course in Florida.

This comes nine weeks after the Republican nominee for President survived an attempt on his life in Butler, Pennsylvania while speaking at a campaign rally.

Trump later confirmed in an email to supporters that there were gunshots in his vicinity but that he was safe and well.

A person has been detained in connection with the incident with the Associated Press, citing its sources reporting that the US Secret Service opened fire on a man pointing an AK-style rifle at the club course as Trump was playing a round of golf.

The AK-styled weapon was later recovered at the scene.

The suspect initially fled in a black SUV after being engaged by Trump’s protectors but was later arrested.

The White House said in a statement that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris had been briefed about the incident and that they were relieved to know that Trump was safe.

Harris later posted on social media that violence had no place in America.
