The Gauteng Health Department says it has successfully administered more than 4.5 million vaccines so far, with over two million fully vaccinated. The department says this is a milestone that should be celebrated.

The COVID-19 vaccination programme has been slow as a result of hesitancy and fake news.

The South African government has been calling on more people to get vaccinated to help the country reach herd immunity.

“At the Gauteng government, we welcome yet another milestone of having administered over 4.5 million vaccines. And of that figure we have at the moment have over two million people who are fully vaccinated. This means that they have taken a full dose of the Pfizer or a single dose of the J&J vaccine,” says Gauteng Health Spokesperson Motalatale Modiba.

The province says it is working with the private sector, media, civil organisations, and faith-based organisations to ramp up the vaccination programme.

“Additional vaccination sites including pop-up vaccination sites and those operating over the weekend are being opened to vaccinate, to accommodate those who are unable to get vaccinated during the week and to take the vaccines to the people.”
