Gauteng scholar transport accident claims 12 students and driver

A day after schools reopen in the province, 12 learners and a driver have died in a devastating accident in the Kokosi-Wedela area in Merafong, West of Johannesburg.

Seven learners who were injured have been taken to medical facilities. This after the minibus, which is a private scholar transport, was involved in an accident.

It is alleged that the minibus was hit from behind by a bakkie, causing it to overturn and subsequently catch alight.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident. Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona says a psycho-social support team has been dispatched to the schools where the learners were enrolled.

“Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane is deeply saddened about an incident that occurred this morning, where about 11 learners from Rocklands Primary School and 1 learner from Laerskool Blyvooruitsig in Carletonville and their driver who lost their lives in a devastating accident. The Psycho-Social Support unit has been referred to the school to provide necessary support.”
