African National Congress (ANC) Deputy President, Paul Mashatile, says the Government of National Unity (GNU) was not the ideal choice.

Mashatile made the comments during the opening address of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) Congress in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni.

The ANC formed the GNU after the May 29 polls when the party lost its majority for the first time in 30 years.

Mashatile says that the GNU was a strategic position that the ANC had to assume.

“But our approach as the ANC, together with the alliance, was to find a way to ensure that we are not derailed from our main goal of transforming our society, including our education sector for the better. As a result, we have to be strategic and ensure that the setback we suffered should not dislodge us from the levers of power necessary for driving transformation including the working the working conditions and better remuneration for our teachers.”
