Some political parties have called for the urgent withdrawal of Municipal Structures Amendment Bill of 2024, which is also referred to as the Coalition Bill, saying it has some worrying parts.

The Bill seeks to provide a legislative framework to guide the formation and management of coalition municipalities in the country.

However, the GOOD Party’s secretary-general, Brett Herron, says the Bill should be withdrawn because the areas of concern undermine the country’s democracy.

“Some of the measures implemented here are anti-democratic, will result in wasted votes and infringe on the constitutional rights of parties and voters to see the results of the elections being reflected in councils and ultimately in legislatures. So, we think that the legislation should be withdrawn. The deputy president dialogue should be finalised and then the legislation affects and regulates all spheres of governments needs to be introduced.”

The Bill aims to amend the existing Municipal Structures Amendment Act of 2021.

It also seeks to provide a legal framework to regulate the formation and management of coalitions in municipalities.
