Former Chief Justice Zondo has described the late former Minister Pravin Gordhan as a brave and honourable man who did everything he could to fight corruption.

Zondo visited relatives of Gordhan in the Durban suburb of Reservoir Hills to pay his respects. This is ahead of a memorial to be held later today and the official funeral tomorrow.

Zondo says he met Gordhan during the struggle in the 1980s.

He says Gordhan fought hard to prevent the capture of the National Treasury and testified extensively before the Commission on State Capture.

“I think the best way to honour his legacy would be one, rededicate ourselves to doubling our efforts fight corruption and state capture. And, two, that we all remember to put the people first in whatever we do. Because throughout his life he put the people of South Africa first. And that’s what we should all do.”

Meanwhile, ANC deputy chairperson in the eThekwini region, Mthembo Ntuli says Gordhan’s experience will be sorely missed.

He was also speaking outside the home of Gordhan’s relatives in Reservoir Hills.

ANC leaders have arrived to pay their respects to the family. The party is expected hold a memorial service for Gordhan at Kendra Hall this afternoon.

The 75-year-old Gordhan passed away in Johannesburg on Friday and will be laid to rest tomorrow.

Ntuli elaborates, “We are feeling very sad for him to leave us at this difficult time. As you know after this election we are going through a difficult time. We have started the process of GNU where we are working with different parties. People with experience like him was really needed to be with us when we are walking this journey. But also, we have the feeling that maybe his soul may leave us with power to travel on this road.”
