Griquas demolished Griffons 59-7 in the bottom of the table Currie Cup clash at the North West Stadium in Welkom on Sunday. Griquas registered their second victory of the season but still remain seventh on the log while Giffons are rooted at the bottom after losing all their seven matches.

This was a battle between the bottom two sides that have struggled throughout the season.

It was the visitors that started like a house on fire with a try very early in the match when Sako Makata made a brilliant run to register the first points for the Griquas. This was Makata’s second Currie Cup try of the season.

Zinedine Robinson missed a conversion attempt, and the score remained 5-Nil.

The Griquas were controlling the match, and it came as no surprise when they scored a second try of the match. Dylan Maart showed brilliant pace after slick passing to score his second Currie Cup try of the season. Robinson missed another awkward conversion attempt and the Griquas led by 10 points.

But the home team never gave up, and they were rewarded when the 21-year-old Tighthead Prop Moango Ngundue showed enormous strength to capitalize on the line out to score a try for his team. This was his second Currie Cup try of the season. The Griffons reduced the deficit to 10-7 after they scored their conversion.

But the Griquas re-asserted their authority when they scored a try from a line out courtesy of Marco de Witt. Robinson finally scored a conversion that came off the woodwork and the score was 17-7.

The visitors added another try on the stroke of half time when Makata scored his second try of the match after a brilliant pass from Robinson. And a conversion from Robinson meant that the score at half time was 24-7 in favour of the Griquas.

In the second half, the Griquas picked up where they left off. They scored two tries in a quick succession.

Connor Mahoney produced a piece of magic to score a wonderful try which was later converted.

Earlier Dandre Delport had scored a try which was followed by a conversion from Robison. The visitors were running away with it leading 38-7.

And it wasn’t long before the visitors showed their supremacy once again. Tertius Kruger scored his seventh try of the season after a brilliant offload. And Robinson made no mistake with another conversion to make it 45-7.

The visitors put the final nail in the coffin to score their ninth try of the match courtesy of De Witt, who scored his second try of the match.

Earlier Mahoney was on fire to score another brilliant solo try, which was his 4th Currie Cup try of the season. Sustitute Tylor Sefoor scored his second conversion of the match, to make the final score Griquas 59 – Griffons 7.
