Schools officially open on Wednesday for the 2024 academic year, but many schools in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) got off to a bad start due to flooding.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has ordered all schools in the province to close. This comes just hours after they opened for the 2024 academic year. This is due to severe weather warnings.

The South African Weather Service has issued a level 5 warning for the coastal areas of KwaZulu-Natal, as well as parts of Zululand.

In the directive, the department says a number of communities have been seriously affected and some lost family members. This has also impacted several schools in the province. The directive instructs all principals to release learners by 1 o’clock on Wednesday.
