The Institute for Water and Wastewater Technology (IWWT) at the Durban University of Technology says it has found critical levels of E. coli bacteria at 11 beaches.

The beaches under scrutiny are Ballito Tidal Pool, Westbrook Beach, Umdloti Beach, Glenashley Beach, Virginia Beach, Umgeni River, Umgeni River mouth, Laguna Beach, Country Club Beach, Bay of Plenty, and Addington Beach.

IWWT scientists have meanwhile advised the public to refrain from using the beaches.

The Institute also added that beaches should not be used for recreational purposes until the E.coli levels drop to acceptable standards.

The water tests were conducted last week Wednesday.

Meanwhile, water tested from Bronze Beach and Umhlanga Lighthouse showed acceptable levels of E. coli.

Ushaka Beach also had lower levels.
