Hundreds of women have gathered at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, for the provincial Women’s Day celebrations. Proceedings commenced this morning with the re-enactment of the historic 1956 march from Lillian Ngoyi Square to the Union Buildings.
The celebration this year will be held under the theme: “Celebrating 30 years of Democracy towards Women’s Development,” to pay tribute to the women who marched in protest against apartheid, including the passed laws.
These women who joined the march this morning say it’s an honour to pay tribute to the strong women of the past.
“We are here to celebrate Women’s Day so we can be organised and so they can see that we are worth something as women, and they must stop abusing us, and we must also have the power to go and work. I am here because we just want freedom and we want to employ ourselves and go to work to support our children so men can stop abusing us.”
As we commemorate Women’s Day in this year of celebrating 30 years of democracy, the ANC honours not only the remarkable achievements and invaluable contributions of women throughout South Africa’s history but also their ongoing efforts and struggles in shaping our society today.… pic.twitter.com/yvq6L8uwS7
