Fire broke out in the early hours of this morning in a five-storey building. Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda confirmed that the building is owned by the City but was currently occupied by squatters who are said to be paying rent to unknown people who hijacked the building.

More than 70 people have perished and several people have been injured and are receiving treatment in various Johannesburg hospitals.
