The Johannesburg Metro Police (JMPD) have arrested four suspects following reports of extortion at a Total Garage construction site in Marshalltown.

The suspects, believed to be part of the construction mafia, reportedly demanded R1000 daily from workers and blocked access to the site.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla says the incident occurred at the intersection of Simmonds and Thorpe streets.

Fihla says the city is dedicated to eliminating the impact of criminal units and keeping a safe atmosphere for businesses and construction projects in Johannesburg.

“Our decisive action today illustrates that we will not tolerate any form of extortion or intimidation. As we move forward, the JMPD will continue to collaborate with other law enforcement agencies and stakeholders to put an end to these unlawful activities and foster a safer Johannesburg for everyone.”
