Musician JR, who is a longtime friend of slain hip hop artist AKA has described his death as a great loss to the South African hip hop music industry.
Junior Bogopa, known to his fans as JR, was speaking at AKA’s memorial service under way in Sandton, Johannesburg.
AKA was shot and killed in Durban last weekend alongside his longtime friend, Tebello “Tibs” Motsoane. JR recalls when he met Forbes 15 years ago.
“I can’t recall how we met but one moment that stands out for me is when I had asked him to accompany me to a show in Durban. He would always remind me how I took him to his first show out of town. That the first place he performed outside Johannesburg is when he opened for JR and would always say that is the last time that ever happened. And that’s where this love affair began that would turn into a long romance with that city. Which makes it even harder to comprehend that the city that he loved like that would be the one to take him away from us.”
