Justice Minister expresses her appreciation to Chief Justice Zondo

Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Thembi Simelane has expressed her appreciation to outgoing Chief Justice Raymond Zondo. Zondo will retire at the end of August after serving as Chief Justice since April 2022, having acted in that position since October 2021.

Zondo has been on the bench of the Constitutional Court since 2012. He started as an acting judge in the Labour Court in 1997 and moved to the Transvaal High Court Division in 1999.

During the same year, he was appointed in the Labour Appeal Court and in May 2000 he was appointed as Judge President of the Labour Appeal Court and Labour Court for a term of ten years.

Zondo was later appointed acting Judge of the Constitutional Court in May 2012. He then ascended to the position of Deputy Chief Justice in June 2017 and in April 2022, he was appointed Chief Justice.

Most notably, Zondo served as the presiding judge of the State Capture Commission of Enquiry. Minister Simelane has expressed appreciation to Zondo’s “wise leadership” in the judiciary.
