A Grade 10 learner has been stabbed to death at Rocklands Intermediate School at Kariega in the Eastern Cape.

Department of Education Spokesperson Malibongwe Mtimka says this incident happened once learners were on their way to their scholar transport outside the school on Friday.

Mtimka says the learner was stabbed in the neck allegedly by a Grade 9 schoolmate, following a quarrel.

The MEC for the Department of Education is expected to visit the bereaved family on Monday. Mtimka says psychosocial support for the school, especially for the learners who witnessed the incident, will be provided.

“We have also activated support programmes to ensure that learners are helped to overcome this. The programmes include anti-bullying, anti-gangsterism and the promotion of social cohesion so that the learners will work in unity and respect one another.”
