Disaster management teams in KwaZulu-Natal are on high alert as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecasts a drop in temperatures in many parts of the country from Sunday to Tuesday.

There is a possibility of snowfall in the Drakensberg area in the Harry Gwala District on Monday.

A 60% chance of rain is also expected in the province.

KwaZulu-Natal’s Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila says, “According to the latest report from the South African Weather Service, snowfall will be confined to the mountainous regions of the Harry Gwala district, with accumulations expected to be less than 2cm.”

“The heavy rains have the potential to cause localised flooding, and disaster management teams will continue to monitor areas prone to weather-related incidents,” adds Mzila.

Mzila has urged motorists to be cautious.

“Residents are, however, urged to exercise caution, particularly during long trips, by ensuring they have up-to-date weather forecasts. As the coordinator of disaster response within the province, Cogta will continue to provide updates based on real-time information from the weather service. Parents are advised to ensure that children do not play in large, unguarded bodies of water.”
