International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola has hailed the appointment of Professor Tshilidzi Marwala to the United Nations University last year as a sign that South Africa is recognised globally.

Lamola is on a working visit to Japan and met with Professor Marwala. They discussed a range of issues including Peace and Security, Climate Change and Artificial Intelligence.

Lamola says many South Africans are flying the flag of the country high on the global stage.

“We see his role for the benefit of the whole globe but also as the country it’s a distinguished offer that shows that we’ve got high-level individuals that can serve in various bodies of the United Nations. We are looking forward to his input on various issues for the globe or issues related to climate change.”

Meanwhile, Professor Marwala says solutions are urgently needed to tackle the impact of peace and security and climate change.

“The big issue towards the United Nations goals is to solve three principal issues. The issue of peace and security. We know the global issues around peace and security. The Middle East, in Europe. Think the second biggest issue is the issue of climate change.”
