Cabinet has highlighted efforts to improve security and public transport as well as tackle growing water challenges.
Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni briefed the media on the outcomes of the latest Cabinet meeting. The briefing took place on Thursday in Pretoria.
The first official Cabinet meeting of the seventh administration took place on Wednesday. As such the Minister in the Presidency briefed the media on the outcomes of the meeting. Cabinet has expressed satisfaction in the cracking down of illicit activities. It has reaffirmed its call on the public to work with law enforcement to create a safer environment for the country.
“Cabinet welcomes the continued successes of law enforcement agencies in the arrest of members of organized crime syndicates and gangs as part of the ongoing fight against crime. Operation Shanela has also ensured the arrest of 756 237 suspects for various crimes and 161 752 of these were wanted suspects for priority crimes such as murder, cash in transit heists, armed robberies, rape, amongst others,” says Ntshavheni.
Cabinet has noted ongoing developments on water security.
Currently South Africa is in a period of water scarcity and the Minister of Water and Sanitation Pemmy Majodina has committed to brief the public on developments on a fortnightly basis.
“Department of Water and Sanitation has established a water partnership office together with SALGA and the DBSA aimed at assisting municipalities to drive initiatives to diversify and develop alternative water resources to ensure water security,” Ntshavheni adds.
Cabinet has commended improvements in the public transport sector.
“Cabinet welcomes the introduction of new high-tech trains on the central line in the City of Cape Town by PRASA, an agency of the Department of Transport. The service has been extended from Langa to Mandela station. The trains will utilize modern signaling system from Langa to Moucha line to enhance the safety and the reliability of the rail service,” Ntshavheni elaborates.
Ntshavheni has extended Cabinet’s invitation to all South Africans to take part in Women’s Month celebrations.
Next week the GCIS and Department of Women will hold a briefing on the activities planned for the month.
