North West Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Sello Kwena and the head of Public Prosecutions, Rachel Mukhari, have welcomed the sentence given to a Lesotho national for rape.

The 34-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison by the Rustenburg Regional Court. Police spokesperson Amanda Funani says he was convicted for raping an 11-year-old girl in a shack in Seraleng, near Rustenburg in 2022.

“The girl was walking alone from school when approached by the suspect who was a friend of a family member. The suspect instructed the little girl to go with him and they were seen walking together to the side of the informal settlement. A neighbour who saw the victim and the suspect walking together, reported this to the victim’s aunt who became suspicious. She instructed her brother to go and search for the minor. Reports state when they reached an unoccupied shack they found the suspect raping the little girl and when the suspect saw them, he ran away.”
