South Africa will observe Human Rights Day on the 21st of March.

Human rights are standards that recognize and protect the dignity of all human beings.

As UNICEF explains, “human rights govern how individual human beings live in society and with each other, as well as their relationship with the State and the obligations that the State have towards them.”

Human rights organisations therefore dedicate their efforts to protecting human rights and ending human rights abuses.

Here is a list of some human rights organisations in South Africa.

South African Human Rights Commission
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) is the national institution established to support constitutional democracy.

Established on 02 October 1995, the SAHRC is committed to promote respect for, observance of and protection of human rights for everyone without fear or favour.

Centre for Human Rights

The Centre for Human Rights is an internationally recognised university-based institution combining academic excellence and effective activism to advance human rights, particularly in Africa.
Based at the University Pretoria, the institution aims to contribute to advancing human rights through education, research and advocacy.

PASSOP
People against Suffering, Oppression and Poverty (PASSOP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting for the rights of asylum-seekers, refugees, and immigrants in South Africa.

People’s Health Movement
The People’s Health Movement is an advocacy organisation that strives to improve health care and health-related services for all.

Its goal is to improve the capacity of individuals and communities to realise their right to health and health care.

Amnesty International SA
Amnesty International SA is a non-governmental organisation that works to end human rights abuses along with its affiliate organisation, Amnesty International

The organisation investigates and aims to end human rights abuses by holding governments and corporates accountable for their actions.

Black Sash
Black Sash is a human rights organisation advocating for social justice in South Africa. Its mission is to work towards the realisation of socio-economic rights, as outlined in the SA Constitution, with emphasis on social security and social protection for the most vulnerable to reduce poverty and inequality.

Commission for Gender Equality
The Commission for Gender Equality advances, promotes and protects Gender Equality in South Africa.
Its role and mission is to promote, protect, monitor and evaluate gender equality through research, public education, policy development, legislative initiatives, effective monitoring and litigation.

Asijiki Coalition for the Decriminalisation of Sex Work

The Asijiki Coalition for the Decriminalisation of Sex Work is a civil society coalition that advocates for the full decriminalisation of sex work in South Africa. The organisation fights for sex workers who suffer gross human rights violations.

Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities

The CRL Rights Commission was established in order to protect and promote the cultural, religious, and linguistic community rights. Its mandate is achievable through both proactive and reactive approaches.

Lawyers for Human Rights
Lawyers for Human Rights is an independent, non-profit organisation providing free legal services to vulnerable, marginalised and indigent individuals and communities who are victims of unlawful infringements of their constitutional rights.
