Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has called on South Africans to unite against segregation.

McKenzie was speaking after some local artists complained about being side-lined at the celebrations.

“I agree with them, you can’t bring these [artists] from Gauteng when there are artists here. You can’t bring artists from the Free State when there are artists in Gauteng. Sometimes we join functions, I got that complaint, I spoke about it, and I fixed it immediately.”

Earlier, police management in Mpumalanga urged members of the public to celebrate Heritage Day responsibly.

The provincial police spokesperson, Donald Mdhluli has this message for members of the public.

“As many across the province engage in various activities to promote cultural diversity, social cohesion and reconciliation, the SAPS remind the public to ensure their own safety and that of others. While members of the public will be busy with activities of the state, it is important to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances and to exercise caution during gatherings and celebrations. Those going to pools, dams and rivers should avoid the consumption of alcohol in engaging in swimming as this can lead to drowning.”
