The City of Cape Town says it is monitoring the situation at the Milnerton Lagoon after a foul smell in their area has been detected and hundreds of dead fish have been found.

The residents allege that this is because of effluent and dirty water in the lagoon.

The residents are demanding that the water be tested and results shared with the public.

The city says it’s investigating the issue.

Deputy Mayor Eddie Andrews says, “Approximately 500 fish consisting of the juvenile mallet species, primarily the southern mallet, were collected in the shallows in the eastern shoreline. The fish was removed by the Table Bay Nature Reserve team for disposal on the same day. We have initiated an investigation to determine the causes of the fish die-off including the analysis of the water quality. In the meantime, we continue to monitor the situation.”
