The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK) has filed urgent papers in the High Court in Johannesburg to challenge the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) use of the term “Government of National Unity”.

The MK Party is asking the court to declare the SABC’s use of the term unconstitutional.

In the court papers, MK Party leader Jacob Zuma argues that millions of South Africans rely on the public broadcaster as their primary news source.

Zuma’s affidavit states that the current arrangement in South Africa does not meet the definitional elements of a GNU and claims that the use of the term “deliberately misleads the public”.

The SABC recently responded to the party’s cease and desist, describing the MK Party’s allegations as “untenable.”

The public broadcaster emphasised the proper channels for lodging a complaint and stated that the letter of demand was meritless and an irregular step.
