The Modimolle-Mookgophong hung council in Limpopo will resume with its sitting to elect a new Mayor on Tuesday. The council sitting collapsed for the fourth time on Monday after voting for the Mayor ended in a stalemate.

The ANC has 14 seats and other parties have also 14 combined seats in the council after the November municipal elections.

The council elected ANC councillor, Sinah Langa, as the Speaker on Monday.

The race for Mayor is between ANC councillor Aaron Sebolayi and DA councillor and former Mayor, Marlene van Staden.

The two obtained an equal number of votes when the council collapsed on Monday. The council is expected to consider flipping a coin to determine the Mayor if voting ends in a stalemate again.

Council sitting

The first council sitting collapsed after 14 ANC councillors failed to attend it, resulting in the meeting failing to form a quorum.

The second sitting was postponed after the voting of the speaker ended in a stalemate.

The third one was postponed following a disruption by ANC councillors. They disrupted the meeting after the voting of the speaker ended in a stalemate for the second time.

The presiding officer of the Modimolle-Mookgophong council is to seek advice on the election of office-bearers (25 November 2021):
