Moroka Swallows legend, Steve Sekano, has bemoaned the decision to sell the team and relocate to another province.

The Dube Birds, one of the oldest professional football clubs in South Africa, will cease to exist after the sale of the club. The club was formed 77 years ago.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) status of Swallows has been bought by Marumo Gallants, a club currently campaigning in the National First Division.

Gallants will play their home matches in Bloemfontein next season.

Sekano is not happy with the developments.

He says, “My wish was to see Swallows being bought by somebody from Gauteng so that it stays here and not change the name. This is one of the big teams in SA, their legacy is very big in this country. There is so much that Swallows carry, if you think of Orlando Pirates and without Swallows in the PSL something is missing. Where are the fans going to be in two years’ time if Swallows is no longer there?”

Swallows came up with a unique crowd-funding model where interested people could buy shares in the rebranded Swallows FC in 2017. The shares were selling for as little as R350.

The initiative was to revive the club and save it through an online model which was set to make Swallows the first club to be owned by supporters.
