Police Minister Senzo Mchunu says former Passenger Rail Agency South Africa (PRASA) employee, Daniel Mthimkhulu’s imprisonment for misrepresenting his qualifications, serves as a lesson to would-be fraudsters that crime doesn’t pay.

Mthimkhulu, aged 49, was sentenced to 15-years in prison for fraud, uttering and forgery. This was for allegedly misrepresenting his qualifications to PRASA.

He claimed among others, to have acquired a master’s degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, as well as a Doctorate in Engineering Management from the Munich Technical University in Germany.

Hawks head Lieutenant-General Godfrey Lebeya says as a result of the misrepresentation and fabricated CV, PRASA suffered prejudice.

Lebeya says they will be working closely with the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) to confiscate Mthimkhulu’s assets. He added that R400 million has been recovered by the AFU.

Mthinkhulu’s case is one of the first state capture prosecutions to reach finality. There has been criticism that government has been slow to act on recommendations of the Zondo Inquiry.
