The National Assembly will engage in a debate on the Climate Change Bill, which will be presented to the House by the Committee on Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment to seek final approval.

The Bill’s objective is to establish a robust strategy for addressing climate change and implementing a fair, long-term energy transition plan, ultimately fostering a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy in South Africa.

It also aims to provide for a coordinated response of the three spheres of government to climate change.

Following public hearings across provinces, the Committee deliberated on the bill and adopted its report without any objections on the 20th of last month.

Committee Chairperson, Phillip Modise says, “It’s very important that while this marks a significant milestone, it might not necessarily mark the end of the journey, but merely the beginning of a new chapter for South Africa. This bill still needs to go to the National Assembly for debate and it must still go to the National Council of Provinces for concurrence before it’s sent to the Desk of the President.”

Earlier this year, the committee engaged community members in Limpopo as part of its nationwide consultation process with communities.
