Nehawu Regional Secretary Samkelo Msila has confirmed that the strike by the workers of Nelson Mandela University over wage negotiations dispute has ceased and they have reached an agreement with the institution. The strike entered its third week yesterday.

The workers marched to the university in Gqeberha to hand over a memorandum of demands, which included an increase in salaries, medical aid contributions, and housing allowances, amongst others.

Msila says the workers are back at work as of today.

“The National Union has reached an agreement with the university, and the agreement entails that workers are going to receive 0.55% as an addition to the 6.9%. It is then our responsibility from the side of the union to consider that through mandate-taking with the general workers, and as we have done so, our representatives have met with management in terms of sealing that particular agreement.”
