Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality says it is engaging Eskom to ensure power is restored to the 14 suburbs currently experiencing a power outage.

This comes after a transmission tower recently collapsed due to ageing infrastructure.

The Municipality says it is committed to working swiftly to resolve the issue.

Electricity and Energy Executive Director, Bernard Tlali says they have reached out to Eskom to intervene.

“This 14-day triggered alternatives that call for other mitigation plans like moving transformers from other places to help reduce the 14 days because we do feel like it is too long. We have also reached out to Eskom and they are currently on site to assist us with their resources.”

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor Gary Van Niekerk says their teams are on the ground to resolve the situation.

“We have our teams on the ground, we have dispatched our joint operations. The EDs of all the relevant departments are attending to the issue. Four wards and 14 suburbs have been affected by this. We have already de-energized one substation so that it can be transferred to a south-end power substation,” he says.
