Nine suspects have been arrested by police in the North West after they were found looting from shops in an informal settlement outside Potchefstroom.

This follows a protest in the area where residents of Ikageng and surrounds barricaded the N12 and other internal roads with burning tyres and other objects.

Provincial police spokesperson Sabata Mokgwabone says traffic is currently flowing although motorists are using only one of the dual lanes.

He adds that they are concerned about children participating in the protest.

“It has been noted with concern that despite a plea made to parents to take care and ensure that children are not used in criminal protests, the police spotted some children at Extension 11 putting barricades on the road and pelting vehicles with stones. Police would like to reiterate that criminality will not be condoned and those who commit crime will be dealt with harshly.
