African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Fikile Mbalula says no conclusion has yet been reached over the province of KwaZulu-Natal following the party’s electoral decline in the province at the 29 May polls.

The ANC in the province was dealt a heavy blow at this year’s general elections after failing to retain its majority when it dropped to 17%.

Mbalula spoke to the media at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg in Gauteng’s East Rand this morning where the party continues with its National Working Committee (NWC) meeting.

Although calls have been growing to disband the province, Mbalula says it is not the only solution.

“We know where we are going. The question is, we need to ascertain without a blame game. And the disbandment is not the only solution in terms of what needs to happen. You use words like reconfiguration and all of that. But the reality of the matter is that you take decisions based on what has been reported and also your own conclusion about what is really happening on the ground and what needs to happen. So, on the basis of that you can as well arrive at the decision, ‘no we need to change leadership’ and all that.”

Meanwhile, the party’s Gauteng Provincial Secretary TK Nciza says the ANC will also look at ways of creating stronger branches as it prepares for the 2026 local government elections.

“But over and above those organisational internal politics, how do we really make sure that we create stronger branches of the ANC? Not branches that don’t understand the issues of our people but then speak to the renewal and the commitment of the ANC; developing a cadreship that is very strong.”
