Making donations towards the work of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation instead of sending funeral flower arrangements is what the late anti-apartheid activist and cabinet minister, Pravin Gordhan, would have wanted.

That’s according to politician and close colleague of Gordhan, Maggie Govender.

She shared why the Gordhan family is requesting donations be made to uplift communities as opposed to sending them flowers during their time of bereavement.

This is in keeping with his legacy of selflessness.

Gordhan died on Friday after battling cancer.

Govender says his state funeral is set to take place on Thursday.

“I’m part of the family team and because it’s an official funeral, government is dealing with it; but I’ll tell you some of the things that we will be very mindful of – Pravin was not somebody who would want things to be done incorrectly or wastefully, so we would make sure that, that is sorted out. It’s an official funeral on Thursday, the venue is under discussion with government, and it would be announced, cremation is private. The family is saying don’t give flowers, rather donate to the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation and they will distribute it to the charity that they would support.”
