The National Prosecuting Authority in the Northern Cape says it intends to oppose the bail application of a 38-year-old man accused of gunning down and killing two police officers.

The man allegedly fatally shot the officers during a chase when police spotted him driving a stolen car in August.

Daniel Alberts is facing charges of murder, robbery, and theft. During his last appearance, he abandoned his bail application, and the court ordered that he go for a psychiatric evaluation.

The accused is expected to appear in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court today.

The National Prosecuting Authority’s provincial spokesperson is Mojalefa Senokoatsane.

“The case is still in its early stages as investigations that are led by the SAPS are continuing in this matter. During his previous appearance, he indicated that he wouldn’t be applying for bail. In the future, if the accused decides to apply for bail, the prosecution will oppose that bail given the seriousness of the charges against the accused.”
