Members of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) at Menzies Aviation are on a nationwide strike.
The company’s workers across airports in South Africa say management has refused to employ temporary employees permanently.
Numsa’s Eastern Cape secretary Mziyanda Twani says they are determined to get the members what they deserve.
“When they are on sick leave, they are paid because they are paid on an hourly basis or they are paid the hours they should’ve been at work excluding those that they are on sick leave. So it affects them economically – their take-home pay gets affected. The strike is going to continue perpetually until management gives in to what workers are demanding. So it’s a strike continuing until management gives in to what workers are fairly asking for.”
