One person has been killed and another critically injured in a crash involving several vehicles on the N1 between Kroonvaal and Koppies in the Free State.

Nine people sustained minor injuries and were taken to hospitals in Parys and the Vaal.

Free State Emergency Medical Services spokesperson, Sipho Towa, says the road is still being cleared.

“It is actually about nine vehicles that have been involved. The cause of the accident seems to be the small open fire that was there earlier on the road. Nine people were taken to a hospital in Parys and Vaal, and one was airlifted to another hospital. The police are still busy with the clean-up and that the road recovery is normal.”

Meanwhile, three people have sustained minor to moderate injuries in a crash involving two vehicles on the N2 Northbound before Spaghetti Junction in Durban.

ALS Paramedics Medical Services spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, “They were stabilized on the scene before being transported to a nearby Durban hospital for the further treatment that they require. Traffic is severely affected and I advise all motorists to avoid this route at all costs. At this stage, the events leading up to the accident are unknown however SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further.”
