Civil body the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA ) says the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has misled the public when it explained why it would not extend the validity of driving licence cards.

Due to technical challenges in the system for renewal of driving licence cards, OUTA has called for the validity of driver’s licence cards to be extended from five to ten years.

Last month, OUTA asked both the RTMC and the Department of Transport for the two reports they used when deciding on whether or not to extend the driving license validity period.

OUTA Executive Director, Stefanie Fick says the refusal to extend the driving licence cards validity period might be linked to a tender to buy a new card printing machine.

“The RMTC told OUTA that it would not provide this information due to concerns over the confidentiality of research. However, the department told OUTA that it searched for this report, but it does not exist. It is clear that the RMTC is deliberately misleading the public about why it refuses to extend the driving licence card validity period. OUTA calls on the transport authorities to explain what is going on.”
