Killer former top cop Van der Westhuizen gets parole

Child killer and former top cop Marius van der Westhuizen will be released on parole at the end of July.

Van der Westhuizen was today granted parole after his third appearance before the parole board at the Malmesbury Correctional Centre on Tuesday.

He murdered his children who were aged 16, five and 21 months at their home in 2006 to punish his wife, Charlotte.

The lawyers for his now former wife opposed the parole.

Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo says Van der Westhuizen remains a prisoner until 2034.

“He was granted a parole placement date of 31st July 2024, he is expected to serve the remainder of the sentence until September 2034. This decision taken by the parole board was aligned to Section 73 of the Correctional Services Act as it prescribed that a minimum sentence period has to be served before any parole consideration is to be effected.”
