Eastern Cape police Commissioner Nomthetheleli Mene has strongly condemned an incident where two police officers in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, were allegedly attacked by three armed men.

It is alleged that two police officers from Swartkops, in Gqeberha, were attending to a crime scene in Wells Estate on Saturday when they were attacked by three armed men. It’s alleged that the men robbed police of their firearms, cellphones and wallets.

It’s reported that the suspects then placed the police officers at the back of the police van and drove off with them and subsequently abandoned the van. After that, it’s alleged that the robbers hijacked another vehicle and forced its driver out and drove off leaving the police van behind with the police still at the back of their van.

Police spokesperson Priscilla Naidu says the suspects were later apprehended after being involved in a fatal shooting incident in Newton Park. Police are investigating cases of murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, hijacking and kidnapping.

Naidoo says, “The suspects have been detained on all of the above cases. A Special Task team has been established to follow up on information and confirm the linkages to all of the above cases.”

Lt Gen Mene expressed her appreciation and commended the swift action of the members involved including the involvement of the attempted hijacking complainant.

“Our task team consisting of seasoned detectives, Local Criminal Record Centre and Crime Intelligence will leave no stone unturned in their investigations. Criminals who blatantly disrespect and have no fear of the law will be dealt with accordingly,” warned Lt Gen Mene.
