Police confiscated more than two thousand units of abalone

The police in the Eastern Cape police confiscated more than two thousand units of abalone from a gutted house in Motherwell.

Police spokesperson, Priscilla Naidu says they responded to a house that was on fire, allegedly caused by an explosion.

On arrival, the house was razed except for one room where the abalone was discovered.

Naidu says the house was rented out and no arrests have been made yet.

“The stock theft unit in Kariega are investigating a case of malicious damage to property as well as operating an abalone process establishment without a permit. We are appealing to anyone who can assist us in investigation [and] in tracing the suspects to contact the stock theft unit.”

“Alternatively they can contact the nearest police station. The confiscated the abalone was taken by the department of fisheries for storage,” explains Naidu.

Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Brigadier Thandiswa Kupiso says, the operation of illegal activities such as this in residential areas can be detrimental and life threatening to innocent people.

“Homeowners renting their properties have the onus of visiting and inspecting their properties from time to time. We will not allow criminals to ply their illegal trade among law abiding citizens,” adds Kupiso.
