Police Minister Senzo Mchunu says more police will be deployed to the OR Tambo area of the Eastern Cape to address increased crime levels.
He held an Imbizo with provincial leadership, the religious fraternity as well as traditional leaders.
Residents in the region raised murder, rape, extortion, stocktheft and illegal occupation of public buildings by foreign nationals as dominant crimes in the area.
Although the residents believe crime is out of control, Mchunu thinks otherwise.
“We do say that it is not completely under control as you would have loved. But we are bringing extra police here as a first measure. We are bringing TRT (Tactical Response Team), we are bringing back NIU (National Intervention Unit) and of course we are going to be strengthening our crime intelligence because we realise in all reports that our current capacity on crime intelligence is not at the level that we want.”
#PoliceMinistry Day 1 of the Ministerial Stakeholder Engagement continues in Mthatha. The engagement consists of two parts: an initial discussion with social partners, followed by a meeting with law enforcement management.
