North West Education MEC Viola Motsumi says dangerous weapons found at different schools in the province are concerning.

The MEC made an unannounced visit to the Meriti Secondary School in Rustenburg.

Police carried out a search and seizure operation as part of their collaboration with the Department of Education.

The search uncovered knives, so called “space muffins,” marijuana, cigarettes and an old police belt. The school has recently experienced a rise in violent incidents.

MEC Motsumi says, “From our search and seizure we discovered knives, marijuana and other dangerous weapons from our learners and we realise that the very same culprits are the very same who were stabbed two weeks ago. They claim that the reason why they are having those dangerous weapons is they want to defend themselves and fight back from those who stabbed them two weeks ago.”

MEC Motsumi says they will provide counselling to the two learners recently stabbed at the school.

“We have agreed with the circuit manager together with the principal that first and foremost, those learners who happen to be the victims, we must seek assistance in terms of social workers coming to school to counsel them. We also have realised that the background from where they come also contributes to this fighting and participation in different gang groups. I must emphasise that it is crucial for parents to play an active role in their children’s education and well-being.”
