As the 2024 South African general election approaches, the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have made their intentions clear: they aim to unseat the governing African National Congress (ANC).

However, some analysts remain sceptical of these ambitions, suggesting that the DA and EFF’s dreams of being governments in waiting may be far-fetched.

John Steenhuisen, who was elected the leader of the DA earlier this year, has been vocal about his party’s desire to oust the ANC. He has also pledged to prevent an ANC-EFF coalition from taking power, warning that this would be a doomsday coalition.

Meanwhile, EFF leader Julius Malema has repeatedly asserted his belief that he will be South Africa’s next president. He has exuded unwavering confidence in his party’s ability to form the next government, both nationally and in Gauteng province.

However, political analyst Aubrey Matshiqi warns against premature declarations of victory. He maintains that South Africa without the ANC is, for now, a mere fantasy.

Matshiqi suggests that the 2024 elections will likely lead to a coalition government, with various parties vying for power. He emphasises that the configuration of this coalition remains uncertain at this stage.

Malema aims for outright victory in 2024 general elections:

Professor Kwandiwe Kondlo of Wits University shares Matshiqi’s scepticism. He points to the ANC’s enduring support base, despite the party’s shortcomings.

Kondlo attributes this loyalty to South Africa’s “socio-political idiosyncrasy,” where historical and identity-based ties continue to hold sway.

Ultimately, while politicians may harbour their aspirations, it is the electorate that will decide the outcome of the 2024 elections. Only time will tell whether the DA and EFF dreams will materialise or whether the ANC will retain its grip on power.
