The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Public Service and Administration has requested the Public Service Commission to investigate the appointment of the head of the Gauteng health department, Arnold Malotana.

This follows concerns about whether processes were followed for his appointment.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng condemned Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko for allegedly refusing to provide Malotana’s qualifications.

The DA wrote to the Public Protector’s office asking to investigate.

Bribery

Portfolio Committee Chairperson Jan de Villiers says the investigations include allegations that Malotana bribed the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) with R8 million to not be probed.

“We received a formal complaint from a whistleblower who basically said to us, listen there are irregularities in the appointment of the head of health in Gauteng. It is quite clear from what the President [Cyril Ramaphosa] has said and what Minister Buthelezi [Public Service and Administration Minister, Inkosi Mzamo Buthelezi] from public service administration, also what is contained in the agreement of the government of national unity that the professionalisation of the state is an absolute priority.”

“One of the most important ways in which we are going to improve service delivery is to make sure that the public officials are merit-based appointment – people who are professionals, who have the necessary skills to deliver that service to the state,” adds De Villiers.
