The Presidency has called on South Africans to reject attempts to destabilise the 2024 national elections. The statements were in reaction to the MK party’s threat of violence if it is barred from contesting the elections on May the 29th.

The party is in a legal tussle with the ANC over its name which the governing party believes is part of its historical legacy.

The Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya told the media in Pretoria yesterday that destabilising the elections would be tantamount to undermining the country’s democracy.

“The elections are an important milestone in any democratic calendar and they should be observed in accordance to the established rules. They should be observed in a manner that respects everyone’s rights to participate so as the President has said anyone who seeks to threaten the stability of these elections will be dealt with by law enforcement agencies, who are attending to detailed plans to ensure that we have safe elections”
